Dragons P1-7
Dalziel Dragons are the Mini section (Primary 1-7) of Dalziel Rugby Club.
For pre-school rugby (aged 3-5) please see our Dinky Dragons section here.
Our aim is to give children the opportunity to enjoy themselves and make new friends all while learning and developing the basics of the game. New players are welcome to join us at any time during the season.
Training takes place most Sundays at Dalziel Park at 10am and we play regular friendly fixtures as well as Mini Tournaments at various locations throughout the season. Our season usually runs from August to early June. See our fixture list here.
Each age group has a Lead Coach who co-ordinates team correspondence. All coaches are volunteers and will be qualified to the Scottish Rugby’s Rugby Right standard or above and will have completed a PVG Disclosure Scotland check.
Interested? Please contact our Development Officer (click here) or come along to see us at our next training session.
It’s similar to rugby but is played in small sided teams on small pitches with a smaller ball! This helps children be more active, more involved and gain lots of confidence.
Primary 1 to 3 play touch rugby – it’s like tig with a ball! Tackling is introduced from Primary 4.
Rules and skills are developed to help the players learn the game as they progress through each age group.
We always recommend players come along for two or three weeks before taking out membership.
Sunday training starts at 10am with Primary 1-3 finishing at 11am and Primary 4-7 players finishing at 11.30am. Parents/guardians are requested to stay within the club grounds during training and games.
Primary 1-3 (micros) training develops movement skills and a love of rugby. There is as much focus on agility, balance, speed and co-ordination as there is evasion and handling skills.
Primary 4-7 (minis) training develops contact and handling skills along with continued movement skills development.
Primary 5-7 also train Thursday nights.
The Dalziel Dragons kit is available from our kit supplier.
New players should wear outdoor PE kit. From Primary 4 upwards, players must wear a gumshield or they will not be able to participate in training or games.
Although P1-P3 is non-contact we would encourage players to wear a gum shield. This gets them used to wearing one at an early age and protects adult teeth which many children already have at this age.
While scrum caps do not reduce the risk of concussion, they do help prevent cuts and abrasions and we would encourage players to wear them.
Football or rugby boots are acceptable but please ensure studs are checked regularly for sharp edges. Players should also bring trainers or astros as on occasion we may train on the 3G pitches. Blades are not recommended for use on 3G surfaces.
Please ensure your child is wearing weather appropriate clothing. Children feel the effects of heat and cold far quicker than adults and we recommend players wear layers which can be removed if necessary.
Mini Rugby players do not usually change at the club but are brought “Ready to play”. There are toilet facilities at Dalziel Park.
Links to contact/membership forms, subscription fees and Scottish Rugby registration forms can be found here.
Children who are interested in joining the club are welcome to come and join in for 2 to 3 weeks before payment will be taken however a registration form must be filled in when first attending to allow contact and medical details to be collected.
