MATCH REPORT

Dalziel U13 Boys v Ardrossan Accies

Date: Sunday 1st March 2026
Venue: Dalziel Park
Conditions: Good underfoot; greasy ball; intermittent drizzle
Result: Dalziel win 55–19 (9 tries to 3)

Ardrossan arrived with only ten available players, and in true youth‑rugby spirit, Dalziel provided additional players to ensure a proper 13‑a‑side contest. When Ardrossan later lost a player to injury, Dalziel again supplied cover.

In the final 12‑minute quarter, some of Dalziel’s stronger players moved across to the Ardrossan side to help balance the match and allow the visitors to grow in confidence — a gesture that contributed to their two well‑taken late tries.

Dalziel started the game with real purpose, and it was Layton who opened the scoring, finishing off a strong early attack to set the tone for the match. Dalziel’s tempo, handling, and support play were impressive despite the greasy ball, and they built a 19–0 lead through sustained pressure and powerful carrying.

One of the standout moments of the first half came from Angus, who executed a superbly judged cross‑field kick to the far left wing. With the ball skidding across the surface, Heath showed excellent alertness, pace and commitment, winning the chase and getting the decisive hand to the bouncing ball to score a well‑earned try.

Throughout the match, Layton remained a constant threat with ball in hand, carrying with aggression and determination. Early in the second half he completed a fully deserved hat‑trick, each try coming from direct, purposeful running, aided by a strong hand-off, that repeatedly challenged the Ardrossan defence.

Ardrossan showed admirable resilience and earned their first try late in the opening half. They grew in confidence during the final quarter when the teams were rebalanced, finishing strongly with two further scores.

A special mention must go to Nicolas, who unselfishly played an entire half for Ardrossan to help keep the match competitive. He capped off his contribution with a well‑taken try, demonstrating outstanding sportsmanship and a willingness to seize every opportunity to learn, grow, and get valuable minutes on the pitch.

Scoring nine tries showcased the attacking capability of this Dalziel U13 side, but equally pleasing was the growing commitment shown in defence. Many players delivered their strongest defensive performances of the season, with improved line speed, tackling, and teamwork. Limiting Ardrossan to a single score until the late stages of the match was a major positive and something the squad will look to build on.

Closing Comments

A further positive from the day was the opportunity to involve the full 22‑strong squad, with every player receiving at least a half of rugby. This level of rotation ensured that all players continued to grow through meaningful minutes on the pitch.

The willingness of the boys to step into different roles, adapt to changing combinations, and support both teams highlights the depth and developing maturity within the group. Experiences like this are invaluable as the squad builds confidence and cohesion heading into the more challenging fixtures ahead.

Dalziel can take real confidence from this performance, combining sharp attack, improving defensive organisation and intent, and excellent sportsmanship across the squad. However, the final stretch of the season presents three significantly tougher fixtures against Lomond/Helensburgh, Cumnock, and Lanark.
